Things To Do

Fun in the Wild Made Easy!
There’s nothing like an exciting hands-on experience to learn more about our natural world. Chose from scheduled educational adventures, make arrangements for a group workshop, or enjoy a self-guided experience. Going Wild is easier than you thought!

Wild, Wonderful…and Convenient
Not far from the growing populations along the outer banks, you’ll discover a rich, natural paradise… uncrowded, unspoiled, and uncomplicated Tyrrell County. Within this nature lover’s dream spot, you’ll find the only mainland population of red wolves in the wild, 28 groups of protected red-cockaded woodpeckers, flocks of tundra swans, geese and ducks that number in the tens of thousands, turkey, bobcat, black bear, alligators, deer, the largest Atlantic white cedar trees in North Carolina, rare plants and more. Walking paths, boardwalks, paddle trails, bike trails and lookout posts offer nature lovers peaceful spots to photograph or observe nature. You may not see a red wolf, bobcat or alligator, but they’re there…and just being in the wild country where they live is exciting. Enhance this educational and fun experience by taking part in a red wolf howling or a wildlife workshop. See both sides of this sheet for more fun in the wild opportunities.

Hunting and Fishing Fun
With five tracts of NC State Game Lands, Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and private preserves in Tyrrell County, you’ll find plenty of places for prime hunting experiences. Regulations on some lands can vary each year (like Buckridge Coastal Reserve—call (252) 796-3709 or (252) 796-1322) so you’ll need to check first.

First-rate fishing opportunities are just as plentiful. Albemarle Sound, Scuppernong and Alligator Rivers, Lake Phelps and numerous creeks offer outstanding fishing for everything from bass to pumpkinseed (sunfish.) Get your license and head on down to the water!

A Hair-raising Experience!
This is wild country! How wild? Wild enough to be one of only 5 counties in the nation to support a population of red wolves.  Join a Red Wolf Howling Safari and feel the excitement in the air. Chances are, you won’t see one but you may see tracks or hear them howl. The red wolf–keenly aware of its surroundings–is listening to you. Will it answer your call?  Learn the fascinating story of red wolves and of this remarkable reintroduction to save the species. Visit www.redwolves.com where you’ll find lots of information about red wolves, the reintroduction program, current schedules for Howling adventures, and special accommodation packages, too. Call The Red Wolf Coalition at
(252) 796-5600 or stop by the office at 212 Main Street in Columbia, NC.
