Secrets of the
Scuppernong
Inland from the
winding black waters of the Scuppernong River,
giants are standing watch. Some are over 100‘
tall and close to three feet in diameter. They
are part of the largest individual stand of
Atlantic white cedar (sometimes called juniper)
in North Carolina and, perhaps, along the east
coast. This stand is believed to contain the
largest individual Atlantic white cedar trees in
the country. You’ll see some of the smaller
trees along the river. The Atlantic white cedar
played a significant role in the history of this
area, underscoring the importance of current
efforts to restore it. This majestic stand sits
on land that will soon become an exciting
addition to Pettigrew State Park and will
include trails and camping sites. Pack a picnic
and put in at the Tyrrell County Visitors
Center. Paddle 1.5 miles to the first resting
platform just beyond Rider’s Creek. Look for
herons, egrets, and other wildlife. Enjoy your
lunch and a nice rest before returning to the
Visitors Center for takeout.
