EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY BRINGS WORLD-CLASS PERFORMERS TO COLUMBIA
The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, in residence at the East Carolina University School of Music, will perform “String Quintets in Columbia” at the Madge VanHorne Auditorium on Main Street, Columbia, on Saturday, April 26. The program features Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quintet in A Major, opus 18 and Johannes Brahms’ String Quintet in G Major, opus 111. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at the Tyrrell County Visitors Center (252-796-0723) or at the door. Public tickets are $25, and student tickets are free. The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival brings internationally renowned musicians to eastern North Carolina and beyond for concerts, master classes, and interactive community outreach. Highlights of the festival’s eighth season include a series of ten concerts at East Carolina University, twenty-three public master classes, a dedicated children’s residency, and concerts across the state in Washington, Columbia, Morehead City, and Winston-Salem. The festival made its second appearance at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and will travel to Israel in May for a concert tour including five performances and a live radio broadcast. Founder and artistic director Ara Gregorian created Four Seasons as a means to bring exceptional musicians to the region to concertize and teach. Guest artists become a part of the community as they interact with regional audiences, coach college and K-12 students, and even lodge in private homes. “I want everyone to come to the concerts,” Gregorian says, “and I especially want to inspire young musicians, to show children how relevant classical music is to their lives.” At “String Quartets in Columbia,” Gregorian will play violin alongside Elina Vähälä, violists Hsin-Yun Huang and Maria Lambros, and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan. “This festival is a cultural treasure for eastern North Carolina,” says Michael Crane, Assistant Dean of ECU’s College of Fine Arts and Communication. “Every time we tell people we’re bringing internationally acclaimed musicians together to perform world-class concerts, we’re making an understatement.”
